"Lunar eclipse"
charcoal

dual tasking project done this Spring. made my own charcoal drawing sticks and dried Weeping Willow bk Salix babylonica. White Willow Salix alba is typically used for both charcoal sticks and as a medicinal in Western herbalism. Salix spp have similar properties of varying amounts salicylic acid and other constituent properties. Linden Tilia grandifolia can also be used for making the sticks and is also a good herb used often in cardio applications medicinally where anxiety, insomnia and cold are symptomatic.

materials used:
2 cap steel pipe (@$6 for this 6" pipe/caps) will last for many years of use and comes in lengths up to many feet)
green Willow Salix babylonica branch
fire/hot coals

- strip bark from green 1/4" - 1+" long cut branch of Willow. (give thanks to the tree spirit, Earth, and the elements, and your own abilities!)
- set bark strips on metal screen, cotton cheesecloth to dry in airy, warm, dark space to dry. place in airtight glass tightly capped jar for storage in dark, cool space.
- place green sticks inside pipe available at hardware, electrical supply stores or metal junk yards. screw caps on to air tight the container and place in wood stove, kiln, yard fire or barbecue, etc. and allow to cook for 5 -12 hrs. remove when cooled or with prongs to set aside and cool. remove sticks and
- enjoy your new art supply and medicinal.

cost for my small bounty of sticks cooked inside 6" pipe runs anywhere from $8 - $10 retail.

Willow bark is a good anti inflammatory though not for all constitutions. it is cooling and Turmeric, for instance, would be a better application with Vata and some Pita Doshas and with situations where inflammation is caused by cold conditions like chillblain or Chillblain Lupus.
here's one good medicinal informational link for Salix;

I like to watch the fifth season theory, Lammas. This year’s early August Summer storm front signaled the change as storms often do. High winds, some rumbles and lots of rain. Two nights down into the 40 and 50s. We are in a new season. The grains, Winter Squashes and beans are ready for harvest. The length of the day is a bit more noticeably shorter as the angle of the Sun lessens and the colors change.
Here in the Northeast the greens change to the metallic Copper, Zinc Brassy, and Copper Tin Bronzy tonalities. The Amber grains and a full spectrum of beans. There are deeper darks with contrasting light colors of the Sun as its light refracts and reflects differently now as it spends more time during the day shining through the lower atmospheres.

I was having fun writing this and then it struck me, “with very fine heavy metal particles floating around in our atmosphere how does that effect the colors of the season?” – one of those deeper darker spaces!
This is the first piece of "the fifth season" Series or "toilet paper series" with more in the studio...

"Stages" represents one piece of art with a photographed time framed processional. Each photo represents a documented, journaled or storied occurrence. Accentuating the concept by referencing it to a three act play with developmental titles; "stages act 1", "stages act 2" and "stages act 3". Pareidolia silhouetted players and settings appear within the staged grid patterns. The previous "unbroken circle" series and the "43 diminutives" works created a sequentially changing directed space for the performing pareidolia characters' search for normalcy, for balance. The forming and shaping of the "stages"' grid were themselves a part of the process of the theatrically referenced work itself in a futuristic manner reminiscent to Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase" and other futurist work.  In "stages act 2" the lines appear more pronounced and suggest literally an open book as a possible source of the story line. In the final act the smaller grid pattern derived from the "43 diminutives" sits within the larger grid further delineating and defining the environment and the cast of the performance as they develop. A framework within a framework...

A general cleaning and buffing of beeswax and natural pigment paintings that were wood framed and glassed  for up to ten years. This is a process of conservation in preparing them for storage.  I do this with a dry, soft organic cotton cheese cloth and a gentle touch. I'll place sheets of butcher block paper between them and store the paintings in cardboard boxes...

I used the grain of the Black Walnut veneer as my template to cut. I'll attach them to the Yellow Pine boards salvaged from a recessed wall bookshelf for foundation to a finished art work later...

I ran across these at a local woodworkers shop in the almost scrap bin; $2.00/ea. Will return the Black Walnut stain/ink I made into drawing/painting with these boards creating a whole new work of art. a virtual conversational on line reply to a friend writing; "did you infuse the butcher block paper witht he Morning Glories"

I went off with this expoundation.

"The flour w/water creates the binding' foundation. The pouring of "wheat paste" and winding/tying the vine down under foldings of the paper help structurally with the piece. The vine akin to the principles of steel rebar in concrete architecture. The wet paste and paper fuse. In this and other works I often use the negative spaces of cracks, holes etc for line, form and weight in the paintings. In length this piece is similar to Frank Lloyd Wright's cantilevering in his design. The relief seen in this are up to 1" thickness. The vine in places reach up out and above the "foundation" creating another dimensional aspect is 1"+ in places. Reducing elements to keep it simple/complex. As the foundation dries and after it dries I apply the color pigments dry as powder and wet mediums, again, helping with some more of the structural component. Recently I've used the commercial water based polyurethane as a final application. More fusion to the wholeness of it with more applied in some places for line, color, shape, reflection/refraction, etc. elements. Really ""] pushing & pulling [" - Hans Hoffmann]  and yanking for the multidimensional visual effect of it. The vine laid out with flow and with chaos add to its illusional quantumness/spiritness/lifeness, etc. The vine was green and violet flowers opened when I drew them onto the paper initially. Tanned/dried, by the sea salt I added  as binder/drier to the paste, again, more structure, color, design oceaness adding to its overall whole effect. Sometimes these hands are moving rapidly, my body dancing about! Hey Jackson likes that action! :) I paint in silence and/or with music for mood, rhythem, color, etc... Great question Steven, Thank you..."

my foot

my foot                     digital                    ©Greg Patch
this exciting podal print was done in the studio working on the "lavender trimmings webh" underpainting. this was washed off with warm water }no soap/heavy detergent} moments after this shot while cleaning up.
the hands and feet are four of the most absorbant places on our bodies for taking in healing with beneficial herbs, minerals, nutrients and energy. looking at what curative effects of the full spectrum of pigment color, with reds dominant, and the mineral oxides of the earth pigments on the "reflexology" points of the foot. these particularly red pigments would be filled with Iron, ie.
