two views of the finished traditional egg tempera "Catskills with the Five Seasons"...

 the mural, a 20" x 171" trapezoidal sets on the surface, latex painted wallboard, of a ceiling recess. I used a traditional egg tempera method of using this medium with fresh organic eggs and Earth ochre pigments. I'm working from photo shots, charcoal sketches done of the Catskill Mountains from Olana, Google maps and my own experiential of living and interacting consciously with the Catskills' energetics for over 40 years. I used the ridge lines of the range as a continuous horizontal structural and rhythmic mark, incorporated the 5 seasons to a year perspective and didn't fall off the ladder while in trance...

I've been working on a mural for my son-in-law and daughter Dave and Carrie Patch Knudsen at their home in Valatie, NY. They grew up in the Hudson Valley and have been living around and hiking the Catskills most of their lives and asked me to paint a panoramic expression of them. 

photos show beginning lay out process for the mural, a 20" x 171" trapezoidal. the mural sets

I like to watch the fifth season theory, Lammas. This year’s early August Summer storm front signaled the change as storms often do. High winds, some rumbles and lots of rain. Two nights down into the 40 and 50s. We are in a new season. The grains, Winter Squashes and beans are ready for harvest. The length of the day is a bit more noticeably shorter as the angle of the Sun lessens and the colors change.

Here in the Northeast the greens change to the metallic Copper, Zinc Brassy, and Copper Tin Bronzy tonalities. The Amber grains and a full spectrum of beans. There are deeper darks with contrasting light colors of the Sun as its light refracts and reflects differently now as it spends more time during the day shining through the lower atmospheres.

I was having fun writing this and then it struck me, “with very fine heavy metal particles floating around in our atmosphere how does that effect the colors of the season?” – one of those deeper darker spaces!

This is the first piece of "the fifth season" Series or "toilet paper series" with more in the studio...
