Acca sellowiana, a species of flowering plant in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, is native to the highlands of southern Brazil, Colombia,Uruguay, and northern Argentina.^[1] Common names include feijoa (pronounced /feɪˈʒoʊ.ə/, /feɪˈdʒoʊ.ə/,^[2] or /feɪˈhoʊ.ə/^[3]) pineapple guava and guavasteen. It is an evergreen, perennial shrub or small tree, 1–7 metres (3.3–23 ft) in height, widely cultivated as a garden plant and fruiting tree. The German botanist Otto Karl Berg named feijoa after João da Silva Feijó, a Portuguese botanist born in the colony of Brazil.


Since moving I've been watching the progress of this shrub blooming in my back yard by my kitchen door  i want to thank the folks at "the arboretum" here in New Hanover County, Wilmington NC. in helping me identify Acca spp. today. They are part of the NC Cooperative Extension. Wherever you live in the states Cooperative Extension is always helpful with plant ids. They are also part of NC A & T State University. 


Both fruit and flower are edibles. Am sure leaf, bark and root are medicinals in their native lands. I do not recommend ingesting it here unless your shrub grows at least 100 feet from roads, house eaves and other toxic areas, and grows in organic soils. I taste sampled the flower. It had a hint of pineapple flavor, not at all sweet, kinda bland... Taste is very important in iding and using herbs in diet and medicinally. With the plants one tastes a very minute amount to avoid unwanted results. It is an art, and takes practice. Before sampling plant materials there are other ways one can "sense" ingestability and energetics of plant materials. That is an art as well. Logically, never eat anything unless you know what it is!

Call for Entries at Cameron Museum for NC Artists

Based on the MOTA (Museum of Temporary Art) held in Wasington DC in 1978 put together by Walter Hobbs and Deborah Velders. The Cameron Museum in Wilmington, NC will host a similar format where artists may bring original work during a 24 hr period to meet with curators Susan Davidson of the Guggenheim Museum in NYC and Nicholas Cullinan from the Tate Museum in London. The idea is to give artists an open meeting with curators from major art museums. All work submitted within size and suitability for hanging art work restrictions will be accepted and shown at the Cameron from May 7 throughout the summer and picked up Oct 30 and Oct 31, 2011. Space for showing work is limited and entry into the show is based on a first come first serve basis. Check the above Cameron url for details and submission form.
My biggest question is will camping on the lawn be permitted for the really able and eager?! I submitted my entry form and am waiting to hear reply from the Cameron on this email I sent to them.

Wilmington NC Earth Day Celebrations today

Earth Day was created in 1970 to promote environmental awareness and to encourage progressive action around the world. It is officially celebrated on April 22, although individual communities around the world host celebrations throughout the month of April. (Wilmington will be celebrating on Saturday, April 18, 2009). It's all about enviornmental education and how every person can make a difference.

Earth Day's founder Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin at the time, proposed this first nationwide environmental protest "to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda." "It was a gamble," he recalls, "but it worked."

That first year, approximately 20 million people throughout America celebrated. By 1990, 200 million people in 141 countries participated in Earth Day. As awareness and concerns spread, so did the participation in this annual celebration. In the year 2000, 184 countries and hundreds of milliions of people were on board.

Do You Remember 1970 & First Earth Day?

In addition to 1970 being the first year our communities united to celebrate our planet and begin this modern enviromental movement now known as Earth Day — it was a noteworthy year in many ways.

• The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22
• The Kent State shootings shocked the nation
• Simon & Garfunkel released "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
• Richard Nixon was President
• The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began
• The Concord made it's first supersonic flight
