"exceed the safety standards for human health"..

ASHEVILLE — Paddlers, dog walkers and anglers should stay out of the French Broad River from the Amboy Road Bridge north to downtown Marshall while a petroleum fuel spill is being cleaned up, health officials say.
On Sunday afternoon, thousands of gallons of oil spilled into the river from an above-ground storage tank at the Mountain Energy Bulk Fuel facility, at 288 Lyman St., about 100 feet from the river, said Laura Leonard, spokeswoman with the North Carolina Division of Waste Management, which has been overseeing cleanup.
Buncombe County Health and Human Services issued a recreation advisory for a 20-mile section of the French Broad River from Jean Webb Park (near the spill site, close to the former 12 Bones) north to Marshall, in Madison County, warning people and pets to avoid all contact with river water. ...

where Ross Creek conjoins Swannanoah... Ross Creek flows South, forms historic Lake Kenilworth and continues South to here where the Sannanoah flows West toward the French Broad River...
"An urban neighborhood [Kenilworth] with some beautiful old houses and trees, it’s also blessed with a mountain and a lake—both of which now show the negative effects of urban growth. The trees are being decimated, and when it rains, the slopes of Beaucatcher Mountain run red.
Kenilworth Lake knows oil slicks, road runoff and a strange green sludge that appeared out of nowhere one fine summer day. According to a flier I received, the level of pollution is alarmingly high. The water contains something called blue-green algae, along with seven times the amount of human and animal waste that’s deemed safe.
Last summer I saw a young couple, the man bronzed and trim in swim trunks, the slender woman wearing a bikini. As I watched from my deck, they took a paddleboat into the middle of the lake and jumped into the water. Definitely not locals: Anyone familiar with the lake’s shore, particularly on a day without wind, wouldn’t put one toe in that water." https://mountainx.com/opinion/040908macleod/

Swannanoa River

The Swannanoa River joins the French Broad at AshevilleNorth Carolina. The Cheraw Indians lived east of the Cherokee until they were obliged to join the Catawba people early in the 18th Century. Their name for themselves must have been something like “Suwala,” because de Soto called them Xuala and, to the Cherokee, they were Ani-Suwali [“they are Suwali”]. The Cherokee name for the route from the mountains to the Cheraw country was Suwa’li-nunnohi [“Suwali path”]. In English pronunciation, that became Swannanoa and was applied to the river and the mountains just east of Asheville.  Pronounce it SWANuh-NOah. https://chenocetah.wordpress.com/tag/swannanoa/

the progressive Warren Wilson College is located where a main village of the Cheraw with the Swannanoa Valley flourished...
