originally "Shawangunk Ridge"
oil paints on papered masonite
26" x 36"
painted @1980
New Paltz NY

release with Tillson NY

certain vertical line shapes are created where paper lifted away from masonite paneling with my amateurish inconsistent mounting placement of adhesive between paper and masonite panel, though I wasn't building the structure to be out upon the ground and it didn't bubble until left out... pooling of Water from rains apparent with Water lines near inside edges of painting... Blue tint appears with cloudy/rainy and Yellow tint with Sun[ny] days between Spring rains...

days 6 -9
back of masonite panel egg tempera painting with Wood frame I made with mold, something eating the mold/mold eating critter lines darker and show better if photo clicked on...
26" x 36"
Tillson NY

I've laid this piece upon the ground to avoid wind blow overs and to alter surface growths with each side like collecting leaf and tree flower, seeds and rain Water and run off from trees above pooling lightly and reflecting tree branches above the surface with day 7 & 8... drenching rains, a certain drying occurs with new sprinkles before more rains with last photo giving a pointillist effect... collaborating with changing environments...

days 7 - 10
landscape oil painting with gessoed masonite underpainting [toxic], egg tempera, mixed mediums, Earth Ochre pigments overpainting, old/new vegetation with Earth and other elements...
24" x 30"
Tillson NY
April 2019

the lines, colors and forms oscillate with intermittent rains and temperatures as they incorporate...

when I look at reducing all of this chaos I see the common denominator as what we as humans have done to the planet... positive thinking places, conveniently, all our "problems" in the trash including other humans [war]... from plastics with industry to plastic people, Hollywood to news programing... now the hot potato is in each of our laps and with no where to toss it... it's in our face and we each are trying to escape, blame (the court systems and prisons, probations are not vacant) and or deal with it in our personal lives...
embrace our "negativity" equally with our "positivity"

days 4 - 7
not sure what the underpainting was other than an oil landscape painted with the late 70s or early 80s on gessoed masonite... and not sure what the painting on top was with egg tempera, beeswax, green tape and other mixed media materials... mice had eaten much of the egg tempera and beeswax surface and various molds bacteria and fungi were ingesting various areas... laid on Earth...
I may let this go on for awhile longer before I put it in the recycling bin with the toxic masonite, plastic gesso and oil paints...

some bright Sun shining bleaches and heats the colors and alters balance with micro-organisms, myself, this munched and molded painting with underpainting and Earth... as one fabric unravels and another weaves with continuing passages occurring for each of us to follow with self determination in relationship to the fractal' expansion determination, expansions and contractions... with Heart beat with Universe...

wall

Spring
4/23/2019

South West

West

North West

wall is supported by 8 ∞ live saplings cut at a 10' height..trimmed orbed atop the posts have budded... I started cutting 4/20/16 after many months of being with the site/space and the basic wall concept that preceded the present turmoil with our border with Mexico… walls we build within ourselves and others has been around for me since crib time I'll assume and reading Robert Frost with elementary school...
wall marks transitional states...

there are another 8 ∞ live woody Liana (vine) sp. that I've cut back from about 14' above ground...  they grew to the tops of an elder Eastern Hemlock Tsuga canadensis on the left and an elder Silver Maple Acer saccharinum on the right, each 2' in diameter… I've bound, and drawn, with the trimmed Liana giving support to the wall and providing line, shape line and form to the wall with their freshly pruned new growth. the wall will provide a new dynamic to the S<>N West side property fence already in place helping to provide structural support with it's metal grid construct. the wall will provide habitat for birds, insects and other critters as well provide a wind and an energy break with the homeowners' fire pit area about 30' East of the wall. more of the remaining undergrowth will be cut away with some being used in creating the wall. I'll be adding more with it as it develops and the homeowner, their family and friends will participate creatively with wall adding pots, pans, cups and color glass bottles, bed stand, anything wood, metal, stone, plants, cloth, feathers, etc. and free passage to the other side ...

Mending Wall

Robert Frost

published 1914

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbour know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
"Stay where you are until our backs are turned!"
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, "Good fences make good neighbours."
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
"Why do they make good neighbours? Isn't it
Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down." I could say "Elves" to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me,
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbours."

with emptying and letting go of a rental storage unit I found mice, mold and other life forms were striving over the cold Winter with munching several paintings... of six of the artworks 4 had underpainting from earlier with my art discoverings, the other two did not ... I lay the work out with Earth to allow another entropic process occurrings and have been photo journaling the changings as seasonal liberating passages ...

painting with reverse of moldy masonite of yesterday's post...
done with early 80s when I began to see the sadness and the lack of vitality with the land... here along the Shawangunks and Wallkill River with New Paltz NY trees were beginning to die off and bug infestations and acid rains were really taking hold, attacking diseased trees and bleaching and drying out the Spring colors... people remarked with my artwork "what a beautiful landscape", I shuddered and folks turned their heads like I wouldn't take a compliment, or they didn't know what the hills used to look like... graying/greying my palette with complimentary mixes are visible during these years... I was still using oil paints with their toxic ingredients and accessories, ie.,  synthetic pigments, resins and terpentines, masonite, bleached and chemically treated cotton ducks and papers...

the same is true now with my Charcoal, Stone & River Project with people saying "I love your photographs" and "oooh, it is so beautiful"...  are people blind or do they think a dying planet filled with pollutants is somehow "beautiful"?... I'm feeling responsible for not spelling this out more clearly, my actions contributing and paralleling our blindness, ignorance and separation from
our natural environment...

5 years later I stopped using oils and began working with beeswax and natural pigments...  after a couple fairly serious accidents doctors suggested to me to stop working with oil mediums, stop lifting and change my diet and lifestyle...
pollutants with the arts is now out of control with corporate sponsoring, and public accessory to our crimes against life with what used to be a more beautiful and cleaner space to live with...
are people awakening to the reality, or is it polarized selective internet illusions we see with insular perspectives?...

I recently let go of a storage unit rental where I found mold and mice were munching several paintings... the first and last had no previous underpainting, the other paintings had paintings under them from earlier with my art discovering... I lay the work out with Earth to allow this entropic process enfolding and have been photo journaling the changings as seasonal liberating passages ...
as I let go with each adding to my stories with them...

a gessoed masonite panel that I have no recollection with the original painting though stylistically looks to be an oil painting late 1970s or early 1980s... the recent surface became a mixed medium abstract with green tape and egg yolk with pigmients that is unrecognizable with me...
