Cattails grown in a multitude of places around the United States, and if eaten correctly, can be a superb source of energy-bearing nutrients. Knowing what you can and can’t eat safely when in either a short or long-term survival situation may mean the difference between life and death.
One of the most important minerals contained in cattails is manganese. According to the Eat The Weeds website, the “weed” generates more edible starch per acre than potatoes, Cat o’ nine tails, rice, yams and taros. A single acre of cattails can produce approximately 6,474 pounds of flour during an average year. Cattails were reportedly set to be fed to World War II soldiers, but the fighting ended first.
In North America two species of cattails are common – Typha latifolia and Typha angustifolia. Typha, a Greek word, means “marsh.” The disease known as typhoid and the phrase Typhoid Mary both stem from the ancient word. Latifolia and angustifolia reference lead size, the former indicating wide and the latter referencing slimness. Typha latifolia prefers to grow in shallow water and angustifolia thrives in deeper water, but the two species are also found side-by-side and crossbreed on occasion.
The brown flower spikes can be dried in the sun and used as tinder or even a temporary torch. Native Americans once used cattails in mattresses and for other insulation and absorption needs. Due to cattails’ unique look, it is very difficult to misidentify mature plants, which could be very helpful when foraging for food.

Turkey wrestling
5' diameter
charcoal with Turkey trot tracks, urine [I assume], snow and broken twigs/leaves with Earth...
11/22/16
Valatie NY

the other day we watched a couple Wild Turkey "fight"/with a Wild Turkey audience booing and hissing in the shrubs for at least a half hour... seems they were pissed off and pissed on, and fit...
released some charcoal drawing with the site and the vibe this afternoon...
why as humans we say they are fighting and we would call this wrestling between humans falls within our ego centric understandings with critters and other wildlife than human...

for a virtual Turkey "fight", I prefer to call it wrestling w/o bombs or blood;

wall
Tillson NY
11/19/16

wall is supported by 8 ∞ live saplings cut at a 10' height..I started cutting 4/20/16 after many months of being with the site/space and the basic concept… there are another 8 ∞ live woody Liana (vine) sp. that I've cut back from about 14' above ground...  they grew to the tops of an elder Eastern Hemlock Tsuga canadensis on the left and an elder Silver Maple Acer saccharinum on the right, each 2' in diameter… I've bound, and drawn, with the trimmed Liana giving support to the wall and providing line, shape line and form to the wall with their freshly pruned new growth. the wall will provide a new dynamic to the S<>N West side property fence already in place helping to provide structural support with it's metal grid construct. the wall will provide habitat for birds, insects and other critters as well provide a wind and an energy break with the homeowners' fire pit area about 30' East of the wall. more of the remaining undergrowth will be cut away with some being used in creating the wall. I'll be adding more with it as it develops and the homeowner, family and friends will participate creatively with wall...

charcoal with Water, Air, Fire and Earth

Stockport Creek
Stockport NY
11/17/16

drawing is shot standing atop a ledge drop of @12' with Hudson River surface...
green dot on the map is the site of this temporary installation where the Stockport Creek carries the Waters of the Kinderhook Creek, and the Claverack Creek in with the Hudson River... this is where the Dutchman Henry Hudson landed on his way up the Hudson on September 17, 1609 and proclaimed it Kinderhook as he saw many children playing along the shore here... the children gathered here from the native community living with the farm, fishing & hunting grounds and the Elements, that abound here... interesting paredolia, geometries and symbolisms with the land formations!...

congruence with timeless layers
charcoal with Water, Air, Fire and Earth
drawing area @10' x 4'
Kinderhook Creek
Columbiaville NY
11/13/16

this site in Columbiaville is as the Kinderhook Creek merges with the Claverack Creek and the Southport Creek... the Southport Creek carries the Waters of the 3 Creeks in with the Hudson Riverleading to New York Bay and the Atlantic Ocean... the Natives that lived here were the Lenape to the South and the Mohawk, of the Iroquois Federation to the North... the Hudson River was called Muhheahkunnuk or Mohicanichtuck by the lenape and the Mohawk... it is  interpreted as river that flows two ways because of the Ocean tides that reach to above Albany NY to Troy NY (home of "Uncle Sam")... this area, Kinderhook or bend where the children are, is a powerful juncture geomantically with the Earth, Water, Air & Fire energetic...
the energetic of 3 numerologically "resonates with the energies of optimism and joy, inspiration and creativity, speech and communication, good taste, imagination and intelligence, sociability and society, friendliness, kindness and compassion. Number 3 also relates to art, humour, energy, growth, expansion and the principles of increase, spontaneity, broad-minded thinking, synthesis, triad, heaven-human-earth, past-present-future, thought-word-action, demonstrates love through creative imagination, comprehensive, fulfilment, encouragement, assistance, talent and skills, culture, wit, a love of fun and pleasure, freedom-seeking, adventure, exuberance, brilliance, free-form, being brave, non-confrontational, free-form, rhythm, passion, surprise, sensitivity, self-expression, affability, enthusiasm, youthfulness, enlivenment, psychic ability, manifesting and manifestation."...

STOCKPORT, NEW YORK, April 17, 2015) — Representatives from Skidmore College and Gravity Renewables and dozens of attendees gathered to mark the rededication of the historic Chittenden Falls Hydroelectric facility today. The project has reached a milestone in the refurbishment and preservation that will enable the facility to continue to produce power for decades to come—renovations that also include an on-site classroom that will serve as a learning resource for students and faculty. Previously the facility produced 2.6 million kWh annually. When work is complete, it’s expected to be able to generate as much as 4 million kWh each year...

the larger, lighter line across the Kinderhook above the hydroelectric facility marks the actual Chittenden Falls, that powered an 1800's paper mill... the green circle marks the temporary charcoal drawing installation...
note the point of the drawing being along the following serif of this omega flow of the creek...

have found two similar translations for the Dutch Kinderhook; children's corner and bend in the river where the children are...
the Mahican name for the Kinderhook Creek is Pasanthkack... and have not found a translation for that yet... any help with the translation will be appreciated, thanks...

and today is Veterans's Day... a day to honor the veterans of those who served our country with war... as one who stood ground as opposed to war because I accepted with my Heart the christian and buddhist teachings of not taking anothers' life... I and many like myself that refused to participate and did not participate with Viet Nam, and other wars, earn status as serving our country in this way... sacrificing through the costs we and our families faced with our decision to not participate with the organized killings... we are honored for our decision by many veterans who did fight the battles and I give thanks to them and to all "veterans" whose lives are deeply effected and affected by our individual decisions with involvement with war...
war is not a solution with humane global citizenry at hand...
only with integrity and honor as humanity will we stand and give thanks...
I'll be making art this day with the Kinderhook [Dutch for Children's Corner] Creek series...
and will begin posting those on Sunday...
